The story of Greek Gyro King goes back to 1969, when Chris Menexas was already helping shape New York’s early gyro scene — long before gyros became a citywide staple.

Even back then, the small operation caught the attention of The New York Times, which highlighted its authentic approach. At the time, the focus wasn’t trends or reinvention. It was about doing things the right way: properly seasoned meat, warm pita, and flavors rooted in Greek tradition.

It was about doing things the right way: properly seasoned meat, warm pita, and flavors rooted in Greek tradition.

From New York’s Early Gyro Days to East Fordham Road

As the business evolved, Menexas eventually split from his original business partner. Rather than step away, he made a bold move — bringing his experience and recipes to the Bronx. He chose East Fordham Road, a stretch powered by foot traffic, students, commuters, and real neighborhood energy, just steps from the 4 train station.

That move cemented Greek Gyro King as a Fordham fixture.

Keeping It Authentic in the Bronx

From day one, the Bronx location stayed true to its roots. Authentic Greek-style gyros, cooked slowly and sliced fresh, served consistently year after year. Over time, the menu grew to reflect the neighborhood, adding pizza alongside gyros, turning the shop into a reliable stop from morning through late night.

A Neighborhood Routine, Not a Trend

For the community, Greek Gyro King became more than a quick bite. It became routine. A place you stop before class, after work, or on the way home from the train. Familiar faces behind the counter. Food that hasn’t chased trends — just stuck to what works.

Serving East Fordham Road since 1969, Chris Menexas’s Greek Gyro King stands as proof that some of the Bronx’s most enduring food stories are built on consistency, location, and respect for the people who show up every day.
